Forget Job Security...

What’s up, everyone! 👋🏻

Who can answer this business riddle:

What’s something that’s been drilled into us for decades?
It became a comfort many of us held onto
But now? It’s slipping through our fingers.
👀👀👀

That’s right — the answer is job security.

The truth is job security doesn’t exist for most of us—and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s probably the best thing that could happen to your career.

Hear me out!

There’s something far more valuable than job security: employment security.

While job security is all about being confident that your company, your role, and your standing will keep you exactly where you are, employment security is about something much more powerful. It’s about having confidence in yourself.

Employment security means you’re so good at WHAT you do, have built a strong reputation, and have nurtured such a wide network that no matter what happens at your current job, you’ll always land on your feet. And probably in an even better position than before.

THAT is what we should all be striving for.

But, how do you build that kind of security for yourself?

There are two key examples, and one little bonus I’ll toss in:

  1. Master your craft (and don’t stop learning). If you can excel in your current role while continuously improving your skills? You’ll become irreplaceable. The more you know, the more valuable you become—both to your current employer, and to the next one, and the next one. Whether that be for your next W2 or your own side hustle ;)
  2. Your network = your safety net. This is the #1 piece of advice I give everyone. If you’re not building your network but creating real and deep relationships? It’s time to start. Developing relationships helps you grow and succeed in every single way. Build connections with people who can open doors for you, give guidance, and push you to the next level.
  3. Side hustles for security. This is my bonus tip. Whatever you do? Have something to fall back on even if your job drops you. The confidence and ego boost you’ll get from creating something that can still support you if your W2 decides not to? It’s unmatched. Even if it doesn’t bring in six figures a year — if it pays for one or two bills? It’s worth it.

The workforce has completely changed. People don’t care as much about what company they work for anymore; they care about what they can learn, who they can connect with, and how those connections will benefit them now (and in the future.) The idea of sticking with one company for thirty years? That’s a relic of the past. And honestly, I don’t hear anyone complaining about it.

Real power is how your ability to adapt, learn, and grow shows up — no matter where you are. THAT’S employment security, and it’s what we should all be aiming for.
