I Don't Want to Be a Sales Manager

If you took the self assessment I sent out last week and found that becoming a sales manager is not the move for you, there are plenty of other ways to advance your career from an account executive level position.Sales people develop a ton of skills that can be used in roles like sales trainer, recruiter, sales ops, field marketing, customer success revenue generating positions, and even entrepreneurship. Chances are, there’s a job out there that you would love that you don’t even know exists! If you’re a sales person and aren’t yet sure where your career trajectory is headed, try this:

  • Make a list of all the things you do in your current job that you’re great at that you enjoy.
  • Make a list of everything you think you would enjoy that you wish you could do better.

Now that you have an idea of all the things you would like to do more of, and all the things you would like more training on; you can start looking for job descriptions with those keywords. Go to LinkedIn, type each keyword one at a time into the search bar, and search ‘Jobs’ to find a list of postings with those words in the job description. As you read through each posting, you can put together a list of job titles that you might like to work up to. (Pro tip: Search for people with those job titles. Connect with them and learn about their day to day, how they got there, and what advice they have to share for someone looking to move in that direction. Never stop building your network.)Once you have a few jobs in mind, you can start building the skills necessary to qualify for those jobs. Use every resource available to you in your sales job to get better, and with every achievement, try to articulate how your current success will translate to future success in your next role. Soon, you’ll be confident you can perform your dream job, and you’ll be able to explain to a hiring manager exactly why you’ll be a great fit.You may be surprised to find that your dream job isn’t moving away from sales, but moving into a drastically different kind of sales. This article offers some out of the box ideas for sales jobs you may not have considered.
